Meet Our Fur Residents
Toro
Rescued at a local Burger King. Owner claimed this kitty was watching the front door and as soon as the door opened, he ran inside and sat on the nearest table. Owner was worried about someone calling the health department. I took him here and discovered he is healthy, but 100% deaf.
Nemo
Nemo was originally from New Hampshire. His owners moved to Florida and were not able to get the apartment they wanted because of a “no cats” policy. I was given 2 choices: “Take him now or he goes to the pound.” Nemo and Toro are best friends now.
Jessie
Jessie was the last cat removed by the Palm Bay Bass Pro neighborhood before the hotel was built. Jessie had his tail broken in 2 places and his right paw was severely injured. He gets around but his paw occasionally points backwards.
Morris
Morris was living on the streets of Merritt Island for over 10 years before we finally got him a safe place to “retire.” He has a bad knee that surgery may repair, but because of his age, we are just letting him relax. The sight of him hobbling across the street to eat and managing to avoid the speeding cars makes us wonder how he survived all these years.
Smokey
Smokey was a hungry feral kitten when he got trapped. We did not want to let him back into the neighborhood (during a cold, rainy, December night) a day after his TNR surgery. We took him over here. After 2 months of hiding and hissing, he is one of the friendliest cats around. He only comes out when I’m around. If there is a visitor, he disappears. No visitor has ever seen him.
Marvin
Marvin was snatched from my back yard when he was a hungry feral. Because of my long working hours, I cannot provide a good home for a dog, so Marvin is the best dog-substitute. He is big like a dog, eats like a dog, and plays like a dog. Marvin and Rocky have regular wrestling matches.
Marty
Marty was captured 10 years ago and still remains very feral. I guess he is permanently wired this way genetically. He is very slowly getting a bit braver (is that a word?), but any sudden move and this guy is gone for the rest of the day.
Pepper
Pepper was a newborn trapped in a drainage pipe. A teacher from Clearlake Middle School heard this faint meow while walking her dog. The meow stopped as she continued walking. After 2 days of hearing these faint cries, she started searching and saw these green eyes at the end of some drainage pipe. She was able to drag him out and brought him to the vet. He was dehydrated, starving, but unable to feed himself. After a few weeks of bottle feeding, he started eating and now he is “one of the guys.”
Dolly
Dolly was rescued from a feral feeding station after being bullied by larger cats. She is a loaner, she does not like or hang around other cats, but is very clingy with humans.
Skitter
Skitter was rescued from a local animal shelter when his “time was up.” He is very feral and run away from humans. He likes petting, but has a very suspicious look on his face. He is not very trusting with humans.
Houdini
Houdini and Skitter were from the same litter and were scheduled to be killed the same day before both were taken from the shelter. Both have the same “we don’t trust you” personalities. They won’t scratch you, but prefer to sneak away if you try to grab them.
Snickers
Snickers was another feral that wandered into my yard. She is a big kitty, so the wanna be Alpha males (Nemo and Marvin) do not mess with her, since she outweighs them.
